It's the same distance from the coals as the grill grid would be. It mimics what soldiers in the field did, but I agree you would get better flavor by laying them directly on the grate.That device will keep the skewers too far up from the coals. Plus you wont be able to use the lid. So i bet you would have a hard time cooking them and they wont get any of the charred/grilled taste.
Just lay the skewers directly on the grate.
Bobby Flay says to oil the food, not the grate, so that's what we do.
