mugsy, try to find something called shea butter. it works great on very dry skin, and absorbs quickly without being greasy.
another thing to try is getting a hot wax/parrafin bath. i bought this one (http://www.epinions.com/pr-Paraffin_Baths-Sharper_Image_Warm_Paraffin_Bath_HF745 )
for dw a few years ago, but i've ended up using it more. i hate wearing gloves in the winter, even skiing or shovelling snow, so often they will dry until they crack, and the warm paraffin was the best thing i've found to heal them.
and there's no smell.
