    December 10 - Whatcha eatin'?

Cold as crap here, at least for our area, so I have a nice big pot of oxtail soup simmering. Beginning to smell yummy! What is everyone else having?

    Chestnut flour?

Bought a Williams-Sonoma bread cookbook last week. One of the recipes called for chestnut flour. I wasn't not aware of this flour. Has anyone here had any experience with this flour? I enjoy trying new things and would appreciate any feedback on the subject. TIA!

    Help with ground beef!

At Christmastime we were gifted with all manner of slaughtered beef, some of which was ground beef. However, I have to say this ground beef is the toughest I have ever come across. There's still a bunch left and I really want to use it. I'm thinking that if I put it through the food processor...

Need info on substituting a sauce for an Asian dish

I just recently came across a recipe for cashew chicken that sounds wonderful. One of the ingredients is chili garlic sauce. I don't have that but I do have regular bottled chili sauce. I don't want to buy something I won't use very often and I'm wondering if I could simply smush, technical...

ISO help/advice on adjusting saltiness of homemade chicken stock

Since it was only the two of us for Thanksgiving, instead of cooking a turkey I opted to sub a really large chicken. Turned out great and we didn't have leftovers for the rest of our lives. Move on to what I wanted to do with the carcass. I used it, along with some bones from some chicken...

63 cents car tax...the rest of the story! ;-)

In spite of it being chilling cold, we had sunshine. I set out with a positive attitude to deliver my princely sum to the tax office. Was greeted by a young clerk. She admitted she had a three-year-old daughter so apparently she hadn't been hardened by the "system. Had a sweet smile. Handed...

On the search for a vintage cookbook!!

I am looking for anyone who might have a "Better Homes & Gardens" cookbook from the late '50s to early '60s. I'm searching for a recipe that might be in those issues. The recipe is for "Marshmallow Pumpkin Pie." It is NOT a baked pie but more a chiffon pie. Any help would be appreciated...

A great big shout-out to Chewy!

For a long time, we've been availing ourselves of an online pet supply source called "Chewy." They offer pet foods, meds, toys, along with other assorted pet goodies. We use their auto-ship feature, which is especially convenient in that our regular items are sent to us on a schedule at our...

I have a curious question regarding the preparation of potatoes...any kind.

I have a new sweet potato recipe I plan to prepare for Thanksgiving. All the ingredients include the usual suspects but the part that puzzles me is that the creator asks to scrub the potatoes before peeling them. I've never thought about doing that with any potatoes that I peel. Is there a...

    Been absent for a bit.

It's with the heaviest of hearts that I let y'all know our beloved Sparky died this morning, November 4, about 3:45. It was a bit sudden and we have a very sad household today. Harley, his best bud, is shaken to the core and loved on him and stayed with him all night long...snuggling up to him...

    Tonight's meal - November 3, 2022?

As I write this, it's 76F. Unheard of for our area and the time of year, but no complaints here. Our meal tonight will include garlic/butter fresh shrimp, fried green tomatoes and more of our "anniversary" cake. The tomatoes are in honor of our delightful summerlike day!!!

    Here's something to ponder.

Here is an eye opening observation, at least to me. Our household includes Glenn and me, along with 2 pooches and 2 kitties. In June we discontinued our commercial trash pick-up. Instead, we opted to get two 55-gallon metal barrels to burn our waste, save glass and metal/cans. Still working...

    Can anyone identify these mushrooms?

These two beautiful mushrooms popped up in our yard the last couple of days. The shorter one is about 8" tall, the larger one is about 1 foot. Yesterday they had ping pong ball-like caps but, this morning, they became what you see in the photos. Anyone know what kind they are and are they edible?

More fun with the air fryer!

Been playin' with the air fryer. Made some breakfast muffins yesterday for today's morning meal and was able to heat them up perfectly. Along the same vein, I'd cooked a rotisserie chicken yesterday and planned to warm it up for tonight and make mashed potatoes and gravy to go with. Wrapped...

Advice on using an air fryer, cookbook

Scored a big win at Goodwill today. Brand new, in box, air fryer and picked it up for a little over $20.00. Otherwise it has a $99.00 price tag. Yeah! I'll read the instruction book tonight but I'd like to know if there is a cookbook anyone can recommend for a newbie with this appliance. I'm...

    Instant Pot...Finally!

Well...on April 18 I took the plunge and bought an Instant Pot Ultra 6-quart cooker. Up until then I didn't think there was any need for one and was also put off at the price. I cringe at anything that even comes close to $100.00. The Ultra was $139.00. So, as I usually do, I went to my good...

Okay boys and girls, I just got my first Instant Pot. Not familiar with this appliance. Any advice would be helpful, especially using it for sous vide processes.

    Tonight's meal - Thursday March 7, 2022

Surprised no one has posted yet because it's nearly 5 p.m. in our region. Been a pretty nice day today...no rain for a change. Bought a nice little 2.5-pound boneless pork loin roast on Tuesday and needed some "comfort" food. So, as the house smells wonderful, here's what's in the oven...

Can't believe no one has posted yet. At any rate, we're having fried catfish and black-eyed peas seasoned with onion and bacon. Dessert will be some homemade PayDay candy bars. Lookin' forward to our meal.

    ISO your favorite omelet ingredients

Glenn LOVES omelets and I want to make more for him. Yesterday we had one made of chives, cheese, potatoes, green pepper, and cherry tomatoes. I'll be going to the grocery store tomorrow and plan on purchasing some fresh mushrooms, along with some shallots. What can I add to my list?

Whatcha eat, Pete? Thursday, October 8, 2020

Been going through a pizza phase since I purchased an electric pizza cooker at Goodwill. It is a stellar device and even does more than just cook pizzas, which means Alton Brown couldn't classify it as a "unitasker." At any rate, there's a pizza restaurant in our area called Pizza Warehouse...
