Think the 'breaking out' idea is good! Was trying to see if some quail eggs would look good and had one I had halved... then I dropped one of the halfs' 
. Those shells are just too fragile.
Of course, so would any shell hitting the floor from the table.
FYI to any possible interest out there - Quail eggs are blue inside and under all that exterior pigments.
Same with brown chicken eggs. They are really just white eggs with a brown pigment coating. Which is why I can etch them.

Good idea. I have some paper insulation which is a sort of multiple grey colour. (Another project under the table - Where the Gnomes Live - a blogger who's done a magnificent tree from cardboard, etc. Got the insulation to make "tree bark" LOL).
I could stuff that in the bottom and scatter the rhinestone 'gems' on top. Also glue some to the inside of the lid as stalactites.
Want the outside to still be visible as an egg though. After all, that is the purpose of using an egg! LOL. But I could perhaps make a "rock" base for the egg to sit on. Still thinking on the edges of the egg top and bottom, sort of needs something to cover up the jaggedness of the cut and to strengthen and protect it when opening and shutting.
BTW - went to the Chiropodist today - he loved his etched egg!

A Duck egg I finished up today.
This egg is white and not sure if you can see in next picture below that the egg beside it has actually got a green tint to it.

Think maybe I have enough "gems" for the cave (inside of egg).
Going to have to go to the fabric store and see what pulls me into and around the egg/cave.

If you are going someplace like HobbyLobby that has diorama/train display making supplies, they might have boulders or even the super dense foam they use to carve mountains and cliffs from.
Somebody on Etsy might 3D print stalagmites and stalactites. A guy printed some tall flames for me, like 2.5 to 3 inches.
Google "druzy quartz" and our favorite sites have quartz crystals of all colors really cheap.

I can make my own stalactites from egg cartons and glue. Think paper mache. Especially considering the amount I would need - I don't think I could give proper enough measures. Whatever I do in that respect will be very minimum as it can't interfere with the closing of the lid and/or hitting the baby inside. They'll be very small, sort of like the nipples on the lids of some Dutch Ovens. LOL!

With many, many undying thanks to medtran for all her encouragement and advice - I have now finally finished a dragon's egg. ... and guess what... not exactly how I had planned it. It evolved into a bejeweled contraption that I'm actually quite happy with. Of course, did so many things in the wrong order... but that's for the next egg.

I may have posted the elephant egg when I first made it. For one of my daughters, who of course loves elephants. At the time I did not realize she preferred African elephants to Indian... oh well.
The other daughter loves dragons (awww, such a good girl).
I just now have to get them out to Edmonton (3,000 km, more by car a bit less by plane).

LOL I don't know how long it took them to unpack them and honestly don't even remember how I did it. Both my sister in Florida and my SIL in Ontario (I was in Quebec then) received theirs just fine.
dragonfly's for SIL, wide hole in bottom to place over tea light.
