I grew up an army brat and I'm Canadian and this poem was written by Canadian Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae in WW1 and helps me remember the sacrifices our troops made in all wars.

In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields, the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I'm thinking a guitar version of the Star Spangled Banner by a musician who wasn't a Vietnam War draft dodger would have been more appropriate, but those guys seem to be popular these days.

My Dad was a 20 year Navy Vet, from the Korean War era. This is what got me interested in food initially - all those areas we traveled to! And I always show my appreciation to Vets, when I can.

Have you ever made Korean Army Stew. I've seen it done on videos, and it looks pretty good. I've kicked around trying to make it for years.

I made something similar to this way back, when I was experimenting with Korean food some, but all the only meat in what I made was kielbasa, not a variety of meats, like this recipe. They said the kielbasa was a substitute for the sausage they use there, but they weren't calling it Army stew - maybe it was that other name!

It was OK, but obviously didn't make a big impression on me, to keep making it, like many other things.
