What are you baking today? | 2014

I'm going to attempt bread pudding today with portuguese sweet bread, dried cherries and walnuts. It's nice and rainy today so it's a great day for baking.

What's for Dinner? Tuesday, November 25th

I picked up some steaks and costco today. After going to both costco and safeway and dealing with the masses I came home to find I had forgotten steak sauce. I almost made myself go back for it because we like steak sauce. Thankfully my last brain cell sparked before I went back to the store...

I think my turkey is thawing faster than I planned

I do this every year. Did I start thawing the turkey too soon or not soon enough? This year I'm leaning toward too soon. I'll take a breath and relax. 15 pounder started to defrost on last Thursday. It will go in the brine on Wednesday. It will be fine...it will be fine....=o)

    Spice up your hot chocolate

I'm with CraigC. Booze makes everything better. Kind of a tangent here but I noticed that my local store has interesting selection of seasonal whiskey's, etc. Gingerbread flavored, peppermint flavored, yada, yada. This may call for a taste testing. For scientific purposes only, of course.

What's the plan, Sam? Dinner, Wed, 11/12/14

We had a long day and the vote was for Chinese take-out. Beef Broccoli, Orange Chicken, Egg Foo Yung, Char Siu fried noodles and some fried wonton's with spicy mustard / shoyu sauce for dipping. Then some tums. =o)

    What's for dinner? Sunday 11-9-14

Bangers and mash for tonight. Baked brats and mashed potato's using cream cheese, grainy mustard, butter and half and half. Not health food but the best way of making mashed potato's ever! I had a cooking marathon yesterday using the crockpot, the pressure cooker and the dutch oven in a low...

What are you tucking into on Tuesday? Oct 14th 2014

I think I'll do some meatloaves. One for dinner and one for the freezer. Oven roasted potato's and a cucumber salad. We also have some Albondigas soup left over from Sunday night if anyone is in the mood. The remainder of that will also go in the freezer for later.

Dinner Friday, 10-10-14 ~ How are you getting your Yum on today?

I've changed course. I remembered that I had made a double batch of a bolognese sauce and had some frozen. We'll have that with rigatoni pasta and a tossed salad.

I'm trying out a pressure cooker recipe for red beans for red beans and rice. A side salad. German chocolate cake for dessert. Or ice cream. Or both.

    Beans: dry vs. canned?

I like to have both dried and canned. I like canned chickpeas for salads and I'll keep a can of black or pinto beans for last minute sides or chili type dishes. Certain beans I like to have don't come canned. Anasazi beans for instance. I like to use those for red beans and rice. Well...

    Struggling newbie

Hi Ahmed, welcome. I would suggest you invest in a good quality dutch oven (big, sturdy pot) that can be used on the stove or in your oven. It will lend itself to many different types of recipes. You can make big pots of food and freeze portions for quick meals later. You could make a...

    What are you canning/preserving today?

It's that time of year again isn't it. I'm thinking about edible gifts. Today I'm going to process the apple butter. It's been a while so I need to refresh my memory on how to go about it. If I get to costco this week and find some nice pears, I'll do pear butter next weekend. I think I'm...

    Homemade Apple Butter

I picked up some apple trays at costco a few weeks back. The remainder of what we didn't eat went into the crockpot today with a splash of water and honey bourbon. What a glorious smell.

What's the dinner plan? Sat. 9-27-14

Brats, mashed potato's and a sauerkraut / apple salad. My family won't eat sauerkraut so I have started making it into a refrigerated salad that I can nibble on over a week or two. It's an excellent alternative to the stove prepared version and none goes to waste. And I'm going to go look...

    Frozen Chicken?

I would use real, crushed garlic. BTW, unless its a holiday or the queen of England is coming to dinner I use the kind in the tube.

Just wondering ... what is everyone reading now?

I have gone amazon/kindle shopping for creepy, halloween-ie type reads. Not everyone's cup of tea but it's my October tradition. 1. The Purge of Babylon / Sam Sisavath - Zombie Apocalypse 2. The Colony / F.G. Cottam - Supernatural / Horror 3. The Lazarus Prophecy / F.G. Cottam -...

    Frozen Chicken?

My favorite is the lemon, rosemary, garlic combo. S&P of course. I like to roast chicken over some sliced potato's. Topped it with a kind of paste / rub of the above spice combo lemon zest and moistened it with some olive oil and the lemon juice. Slather it on the chicken and as the chicken...
