One of my main pet peeves is how the term "Alfredo" is attached to ANY WHITE SAUCE. This drives me crazy. I know it shouldn't. It's just butter and cheese!
Drives me crazy too.

I often see it in the context of a quick and easy recipe with only a few "pantry staples". grumble grumble, rude word, rude word.

I have that same automatic reaction when somebody British says the word "taco." :mad: :ROFLMAO:

Yup, TV's sure ain't what they were back in the sixties. And I miss the good old days when I could spend my weekends fixing whatever broke on my car that week. :rolleyes:

Linda, you must get pretty rough with your strainers, or you take after my father and but the absolute cheapest version of everything. :ROFLMAO:

He puts his potatoes in cold water and brings it up to a boil.

Doesn't Vegetable Cooking 101 teach:-
Root vegetables are placed in cold water and brought to a boil.
Above ground vegetables are placed into boiling water.

Of course there are always going to be exceptions but the above is no secret!

That's how I've always done my potatoes.

I've never heard or read anyone say that rule. I do use cold water for potatoes and carrots. I also use cold water if I boil raw beans, but I otherwise steam them (which is boiling water). I've never thought of it.
 
I microwave all my vegetables (without added water) just washed and covered except potatoes for mashed or baked.
 
But before microwaves and before steaming became a popular 'healthier' way to cook vegies, other than the Sunday roast, nearly all vegetables were boiled, no?
Many do it not realizing that they were just following what their adults did.

I won't say I've never put green beans in cold water and brought them to a boil, but one has to almost stand over them not to overcook.

I've always wanted to try the "blanch and shock" method. But, truth be told, I don't cook fresh green beans that often, unless it's a nice pot of ham and green beans. In that case I like the beans to be soft. Not mushy, just soft, about the consistency of canned green beans.

But for having the long green beans as a side dish, yes, I like them to be slightly crunchy, just not too crunchy.

I boil my potatoes that way, but never knew it was the right way. I just did it.

I think Alton Brown said to bring dry beans to a boil, then turn off the stove and let them soak overnight. Then cook them. That is supposed to "de-gas" them. I've tried it, and it does seem to reduce the toot factor.

Yes, the cat. The cat that I trip over on a regular basis.

I swear she's trying to kill me.
My bony ass cat is too small to trip over. She just gets under my feet and screams bloody murder when I step on her. She is also really skilled at opening those tough white plastic bags that my prescriptions come in.

Awww, she's so cute! Hope she shared the pills with you :ROFLMAO:

This is my Ally, taken just last night. She wore herself out wandering the house, crying for my other cat, Alex, that we just lost on Monday. He was 16 and very sick, so we made the decision to end his suffering. Ever since then, Ally has been crying for him.
