October is upon us, so let's do a new challenge. Halloween Food.

As with my last challenge, there are no rules, other than you enter something Halloween related. It can be a tasty treat, or something made from pumpkin, or anything else that says "Halloween!" to you.

No winners, no losers. Just have fun!!!

Those were for the 30 year old at the time.

Careful casey, she might find one hiding somewhere in the cupboard and send that one to you.

I should get around to doing the pumpkin jelly roll cake. Think it was Got Garlic that put me on to that one.
Hey GG - miss you!

No one said the Challenge is for homemade food. It's anything that screams Halloween to you.

LOL well, you could at least post a picture of that atrocity!
Sounds like something you'd find at Honeydukes on High Street in Hogsmeade.
Do you go there often?

I know a High Street in Dumbo, Brooklyn NY but that's all. Hold on for the picture.

Wow, this has stalled out. My feelings are hurt. Well, not really, but if it will guilt some people into entering, I'll use it.

I am willing to double the prize money for the winner, which means nobody will win double of nothing.

I'll admit that I've neglected this challenge, too. I have to spend a week in Houston during the remaining days of this challenge (pathetic plea for sympathy), but will try to come up with something to enter.

Hey Dragn, you mentioned a jelly roll...

I don't really do anything for Halloween. I hate the flavour of pumpkin, so...

I don't even get kids trick or treating anymore. I used to put on a black blouse and skirt and a pointy black hat to hand out treats.

I've been so busy trying to get those chicken coats and dragon's egg done... (no excuse, just stating a fact)
Honestly I have still been thinking about it in the back of my head!!

Not edible but a couple of years ago, I saved some blown out white egg shells. Partially filled them with flour, taping the hole over with a piece of white/clear tape. Had the kids draw ghost faces on them. Then outside had them throw the ghost eggs at a target chalked on the driveway. It was great fun!

Don't fill the eggs too full of flour - otherwise the "smoke" as the ghost explodes is too heavy. Gets a better effect with less.

Again, not food but popsicle sticks glued together, painted, googly eyes, rainy day project.

Found it! a picture from before the kids did theirs, I did a couple to get them started.

Sugar Cookies. I outlined some to help them use the more liquidy icing for filling.

this cookie recipe is great for cutting shapes and a lot less sweet than conventional sugar cookie dough. Matter of fact not even sure why the author called them sugar cookies as you almost need the icing to make them just perfect.
Makes a lot of cookies! I use it for Christmas cookies too.

Another Pumpkin recipe!
Pumpkin Squares
4 Eggs
1 cup vegetable oil
1.3/4 cups white sugar
16 oz Pumpkin puree (460 ml)
2 tsp cinnamon
2 tsp baking powder
2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
2 cups flour

Beat together eggs, oil, sugar & pumpkin puree. Mix in dry ingredients.

Grease & flour a 9 x 13 pan. Bake at 325 F for 25-30 minutes. (I've done more, depends on your oven)

Icing (your standard creme cheese icing)
2 cups icing sugar
1 pkg creme cheese (3 oz)
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup butter

This freezes very, very well. I cut and freeze the squares separately from the icing. Freeze the icing in small containers. Both icing and squares defrost quickly.

How about some carved pumpkins? Anybody have any special ones they or their family's have done? or will do?
(Please, it would be nice if you limit them to you and yours, not commercial)

Pumpkin Hand Pies
Ingredients:

Crust

1¼ cups whole wheat pastry flour
Pinch of salt
3 Tbs very cold butter
¼ cup cold water
Bench flour, for rolling out the crust

Filling

½ cup unsweetened pumpkin puree
4 tsp Blue Agave Nectar
¼ tsp pumpkin pie extract

Instructions:
Crust

Combine the flour and salt in a medium bowl. Cut in the butter with a pastry blender. Add the ice water a tablespoon at a time until the dough forms a ball. Do not add anymore water than you need to form the dough. Pat the dough into a disc, wrap it in plastic wrap and refrigerate it for at least 30minutes.

Preheat the oven to 400F.Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Remove the dough disc from therefrigerator and roll it out to a ¼-inch thickness on a lightlyfloured surface. Use a pumpkin shaped cookie cutter to cut out pumpkin shapes. Use a paring knife to cut-out pumpkin faces in half of the pumpkin shapes. Place the pumpkin shaped dough on theparchment lined cookie sheet and put it in the refrigerator while you prepare the filling.

Filling

In a small bowl, combine the pumpkin puree, Agave Nectar and pumpkin pie extract.

Remove the baking sheet from therefrigerator. Place a heaping teaspoon of filling in the center of each blank pumpkin shape and use a spoon to spread the filling almost to the edges. Lightly dip your finger into water and rub the edge ofthe pumpkin shape with the water. Place a pumpkin shape with cut-outs on top of the filling and lightly press the edges together to seal. Repeat with the remaining shapes.

Bake the hand pies for 16 to 20minutes, until golden brown. Allow the hand pies to cool on the baking sheet for 10 minutes, then transfer them to cooling racks to cool completely.
