The idea is to eat poor on NYD and the rest of the year will be prosperous. I bought a ham for .78 cents per pound and both the limas and the black-eyed peas were inexpensive (Lima beans aren't traditional but I had some on hand and 1/2 that amount of black-eyed peas). Cornbread and greens are inexpensive as well...lots of people do the pork loins and saurkraut which isn't costly either.I don't like black-eyed peas.
