From Bon Appetite November 1998. TO be served with gingerbread and whipped cream, but just PERFECT alone:

Spiced Citrus Compote

1 cup water
1/3 cup sugar
1/4 cup rinds of grapefruit - strips
1/4 cup rinds of orange - strips
2 tbs dried sweet cherries
1/4 teaspoon whole cloves
1/4 teaspoon whole allspice
1 - 3 inch stick cinnamon

2 cups pink grapefruit sections (2 large grapefruit)
1 1/2 cups orange sections (4 oranges)
3/4 cup tangerine sections (2 tangerines)

Combine water, sugar, rinds, cherries, cloves, allspice, cinnamon in a saucepan. Boil, cover, reduce heat, simmer 10 min. Strain mixture, discard solids.
Combine syrup mix and fresh citrus in large bowl. Cover, chill AT LEAST 3 hours. Garnish with additional strips of orange rind, serve. For 6.
