    Top Chef TV show

I am watching 'Top Chef' a 'new' America-based series on the UK's cable tv food channel. Is it a new show? How successful is it in America? Is it on mainstream tv? I've seen three episodes so far - really enjoyable.

    Thanksgiving Celebrations

What a fantastic response to my post. Thank you very much everybody. It was positively mouth-watering to read your messages! Thanksgiving seems to be an enormously big celebration and, in my house at least, Christmas Day lunch is the nearest we come to it. The supermarkets here are hell-bent on...

    Thanksgiving Celebrations

I live in the United Kingdom. I don’t know much about Thanksgiving meals and celebrations except what I’ve seen on TV and on film at the cinema. What would I be eating if I was invited to your Thanksgiving Dinner this year? Are your supermarkets filled with aisles and aisles of Thanksgiving food...

    The Person Below Me

I did, but there was no-one there to play with. I went home. tpbm would have gone home and put his socks in the washing machine.

    School dinners

I'm amazed at how reasonable the cost of your school meals are. They must be fairly heavily subsidised. Thank you Fisher's Mom for the welcome!

    School dinners

Hello, Caine: The problem - if it is indeed a problem - with my son is that he doesn't eat a great deal. There are enormous restrictions upon the staff who prepare food for our school children: they have to watch salt, sugar and fat intakes. All music to a mother's ears except the children...

    Barefoot Contessa

Hello, Caine: I didn't mean to be critical about Ina Garten because she is so very entertaining to watch. But it one episode - I think it was a thanksgiving dinner for two show - she actually served one Cornish hen per person with swede and fried onions(or, you may call them turnips - I'm not...

    School dinners

How do school dinners work in North America? I love in London and, as a mother of a primary school aged child, I can tell you they are not too popular. My son's verdict is: "Yuk". For lunch, my 10 year old might expect pasta, two vegetables, and for dessert maybe what he describes as a...

Thank you for replying. I really love the blokes (it usually is men!) who dress the tables during each show. It's so camp! Also, Ina manages to look really surprised and delighted at their work. Brilliant.

    Barefoot Contessa

I love Ina Garten. I live in London and probably wouldn't have heard about her had it not been for cable tv. Is she popular in North America? I don't know about her recipes (they seem rather on the rich side - loads of butter and salt, it seems to me) but she's great to watch. Are her shows a...

How do I marinade in vacuum sealer bags?

Thank you everybody for your advice. My manual says "liquids should be frozen prior to vacuum sealing" but I wanted to try a less time-consuming method. I'm going to give the paper towel suggestion a try. Thanks again.

How do I marinade in vacuum sealer bags?

I have a vacuum sealer which has been sitting idle for too long. It's a basic model SealAMeal (no attachment for canisters). I've read it's possible to marinade meat in bags. Have you done this? How does it work? How do you prevent the liquids seeping up into the machine? Thanks for any advice.

    ISO Seville oranges in UK

Hi, Alisontomsmum, I bought some Seville oranges in Sainsbury's a couple of weeks ago. They are sold in 1.5 kilo bags. I froze the oranges on the day of purchase, and will make marmalade when I have the time. Hope this helps.
