TRUTH !!
A product of the Industrial Revolution in Ireland and Britain, a Knocker-up or Knocker-upper was essentially a human alarm clock in an era where functional mechanical alarm clocks were not readily available to the masses.
The Knocker-up's job was to rouse people for a morning work shift. Typically this meant knocking on the door but innovations were adapted to reach multiple doors quickly such as long sticks to tap on windows of higher floors, or even pea shooters to pelt doors. The Knocker would wait for confirmation the worker had risen before moving on. Often it was a job for the elderly but policemen sometimes took it on as a side job during their morning patrols to supplement their pay. The profession waned and eventually becoming obsolete as alarm clocks became more reliable, but it lasted for over 100 years into the 1920s.
