Want to give smash burgers a go but can never find anything good for smashing the meat down. Any recommendations?

Hi CDodsley, Welcome to DC.

What are smash burgers? Are they made with minced/ground beef?

If so, wouldn't you just press them down with any wide flat utensil?

Such as a spatula, large wooden spoon or serving spoon.

They are basically meatballs of ground beef you smash down. My main issue is get enough equal force to make the ball equally flat. The flat spatula does sound like it would work though. Thanks.

I just use the bottom of another pan. Wrap it in foil first if you don’t want to clean it afterwards.

I think, part of the Smash Burger appeal is the imperfect end product? So to speak? It is supposed to be a bit off, not like a perfectly round burger patty.

You could also use a flat-bottomed tumbler.

And as Scott has suggested for the pan you could wrap bottom in foil.
