Yes, but it is important to consider two things for most of us. One is that all weight loss, however achieved, results from burning more calories than one takes in. The second is that deprivation of certain foods can cause people to reverse their weight loss by going back to what they enjoy eating. People who have health problems such as diabetes can't eat everything but they can control how much of it they eat.

I found that, while I was hungry all the time when I started portion control, that went away over time as my body got used to the smaller portions. I believe I can keep this up for the duration and even increase the portions a little when I reach my goal which is ideal weight for my size and age. I should be there by the end of this year.

Take your time. Lose the weight slowly. It is really painless. I think I'll go have a toasted bagel with cream cheese now as a snack.

@fmw I think it is terrific that you found something that supports your health goals, but not all who embrace low carb or keto do it for weight loss. Please do not assume to know the motives of those who embrace low carbing for their own personal lifestyle and health choices. When I was on a low carb diet, weight was not the issue nor the goal but it was a satisfying side-effect. Most people discuss their health choices with their own medical team. If this is not for you, simply pass it by. Enjoy the bagel with cream cheese. Cream cheese is awesome on a low carb diet and this team can offer delicious bagel-like alternatives!

If weight loss is not the purpose then it isn't a balanced diet. Carbohydrates are an important food group. They aren't inherently bad.

Thanks but I don't need a bagel alternative. I like the real thing. Usually I eat a half bagel for a snack but today I ate the whole thing and skipped lunch. It served me well until I had my pasta and salad dinner. I did include some hard boiled egg slices and feta cheese in the salad so that part was low carb. ;)

This is not true. From https://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/stop-counting-calories
"This idea of 'a calorie in and a calorie out' when it comes to weight loss is not only antiquated, it's just wrong," says Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford, an obesity specialist and assistant professor of medicine and pediatrics at Harvard Medical School.

The truth is that even careful calorie calculations don't always yield uniform results. How your body burns calories depends on a number of factors, including the type of food you eat, your body's metabolism, and even the type of organisms living in your gut. You can eat the exact same number of calories as someone else, yet have very different outcomes when it comes to your weight.

I. I. I. I. I. People are not all the same. What worked for you won't necessarily work for everyone.

@fmw Well, everyone has one - I mean an opinion, of course.

What I love best about DC is that most people stick to the forum topic, support people who seek answers, and do not typically try to undermine lifestyle choices. Obviously, I do not agree with Fmw and believe that low carbing is a great way to achieve several lifestyle goals. It certainly worked for me. But whether I agree or disagree with a thread, I won't put down what other people select to do within a thread that was specifically generated to support them.

This doctor doesn't like calorie counting. I don't either and I don't do it. But the fact is that weight loss occurs and only occurs when you metabolize more calories than you take in. It isn't antiquated. It is the way the body works. Overweight people have stored excess fat cells throughout their body. The weight loss occurs when the body metabolizes those fat cells because there is inadequate caloric intake or inadequate exercise or both. Weight loss is nothing more than that. It isn't antiquated. It is the science of physiology. It works the same not only for all people but for all mammals.

How you achieve that ratio between intake and metabolism is up for grabs. I don't like your method because it doesn't involve a balanced diet. You don't like mine for whatever reason. Hope that helps explain what you read in that article. Sorry to have entered this discussion. It turned out to be a bad idea.

It's possible that your body has adapted to the lower calorie intake and has reached a plateau. It may be beneficial to assess other aspects of your lifestyle, such as exercise and stress levels, as they can also impact weight loss.
