Tonight's national news reported we should toss ALL romaine regardless of whether it's bagged hearts, heads, chopped, etc.

They also suggested you sanitize the inside of the fridge where the lettuce may have been stored.

Yup, says that in my link too. I'm glad I don't have any romaine at the moment, so I won't have to deal with the sanitizing.

I work for a company that handles product recalls. Most recent one is Piqua chips that are super hot: Carolina Reaper and Naga Viper Pepper chips. A 14-year old kid ate them and died so they issued a national recall.

A few months ago it was Mott's applesauce no sugar added (only certain production date codes were affected). Apparently they had a higher level of some sort of mold than allowed by the FDA so they recalled those date codes. Yes, the FDA allows some levels of these molds to be present in applesauce (another reason for people to just make their own). I think the average person could eat it with no issues but all it takes is one or a few immunocompromised people and they could get very ill or die.

We usually only handle shelf-stable products. There have been lots of them over the past 17 years but it seems to be more prevalent lately. Most of them are recalls involving non-life threatening issues (product quality issues), but I remember years ago when Peter Pan peanut butter was recalled for salmonella that did kill some people. Last year there was a baby formula that killed some infants. Terribly sad.

Here's one that seems to have just come out:

We have three different kinds of Granola bars, none of them are on this list though *phew*

Looks like I might have some work coming up for next week and January.

What kind of work?
I am a product recall and quality control specialist. If we get the contract they'll open the project this coming week. There's a chance that it might get handled internally though. If we get the project, the stores will have pulled the product and we go in and inspect the shelves and backroom for affected codes to double check the recall has been handled properly. Sometimes we destroy on site nd sometimes we remove it for destruction elsewhere.

And of course I have to test negative for Covid-19 1st.

Very cool 😎
I like it. It's an important job to protect the public. We don't handle perishable items, it's shelf stable products nearly always.

And some assignments are just quality control where a product is being voluntarily removed due to a product not meeting the company's standards (not harmful). I also do candy inspections sometimes where I take photos and upload them to the app for review. Like cracks or clumping--cosmetic issues. Again, nothing hazardous.

Jusa, thank you for doing such an important job. Considering all the "foreign objects" and contaminates found in processed foods, you are saving lives!
I'm not afraid of food, but knowing that folks like you are on the job and protecting the public makes me more secure.

Thanks! It does make me feel good to do this work.

I also sometimes am a courier for this company where I directly handle consumer complaints by scheduling an appointment with the consumer to pick up a product that is not quite right (sometimes a foreign object in food) and then I ship it to the manufacturer's lab for testing.

One time a peson found a piece of macaroni in her canned pineapple. Another time someone found a tooth in her bag of salted nuts. There have been plenty where it left me scratching my head. I'm not allowed to say when I'm skeptical but there have been times...

Not human safety related but I found an entire petrified American cheese sandwich on white bread in a container of Scott’s EZ seed

I'm starting to get a tad concerned about the volume of recalls related to "listeria". FDA Link - Fortunately, the list of products isn't stuff that I normally buy, but still! They keep expanding the list of products and the retailers too.

I buy those Dole salad kits to take over when everyone needs to bring a dish and I have no time. Unsettling.

Over the years, it seems like there has been a disproportionate number of bagged salad products that have been recalled. That's kinda' weird.
