    Good Deal On Strip Steaks

Krogers had whole USDA choice beef strips on sale last week for $3.99 per pound. It was just too good of a deal to pass up, so we bought a couple of them – total weight of 26 pounds. They were from National Beef Packing Co, which I’d never heard of, so I did a little research. They are owned by...

    Black And Blue Salad

Since we had a flat iron steak in the freezer, plenty of salad material and some blue cheese dressing, Bev suggested we have black and blue salad for dinner – which I’d never heard of. We marinated the steak in the leftover roadside chicken stuff from yesterday, grilled it for 3 minutes per...

    Now That's A Sandwich

Every since I saw Bobby Flay in a muffuletta throwdown on Food Network, I've been wanting to try one. I made up the olive salad this past Saturday and the flavors have been marrying since then. I used the recipe from http://www.nolacuisine.com/2009/05/24/central-grocery/. We didn't have the...

    Soup in the summer

Our granddaughter moved in with us in May and one of her favorite foods is chicken noodle soup (Campbells - she's led a sheltered life). So I decided that if she's going to eat soup, she should eat GOOD soup, so I whipped up a batch using my dad's recipe. I left out the usual peas and added...

    Sausage Day Today

I have a Chech friend who got me some spice mix from a Chech meat market in Texas (old family recipe) and I made up a 10# batch today. I don't have a stuffer so I just roll it in logs about 1 1/2 " in dia and smoke it to 148F. Makes it more like a fatty but still very good. For batch two, I...

    Tennessee Whole Hog

I have a friend who has been cooking whole hogs out in west Tennessee since he was a kid. Baby back ribs - $2.99/lb at Ingles

Usually when a grocer around here advertises babybacks, they're really loinbacks, so I was surprised when I went into Ingles today to get some of their $2.99/# special and they all weighed between 1.7 and 2.1 lbs. I could not find that they are injected with anything. They are Carolina Pride...

Not BBQ, but oh so good

Had some new potatoes (dug last week) boiled til fork tender then browned in butter; green beans (picked last nite) cooked with a smoked ham hock, and a little out-of-my-garden onion and garlic; and a couple ears of bi-color sweet corn (picked an...
