    Substitute for veal kidney

Thanks, I live in Minnesota, though I am in the Twin Cities area. I will probably go with the veal liver, Walmart has it for less than $5 a pound. There's not a huge demand here for the super gourmet foods. Yeah, you can order online at places like Wild Fork, but the shipping is expensive...

    Substitute for veal kidney

It seems that there is not much demand for kidney meats where I live. When it does come up in the grocery store search engine, it’s very expensive, over $100 for a single item, and even plain old beef or pork kidney doesn’t come up at all. If I want to make some of the Julia Child recipes with...

What's the last movie you watched?

Mine was Avatar 2 on streaming. I avoid going into theaters alone these days, for the most part. Just too risky nowadays.

What have you had for lunch lately?

Made the "Sauteed Cod With Lentils" recipe from the Gourmet Today cookbook. Did not have cod, so I substituted rainbow trout. Turned out pretty good.

Are all canned food ready to eat without any cooking?

I buy canned seafood quite a bit -- it's a good cheap high protein snack out of the can (some are, anyway).

Poll Time: Are you planning to keep buying private label when the economy settles?

For many things I have to, it's the only way to get my work discount unless they change it, which I'm hoping they will.

Are all canned food ready to eat without any cooking?

Most are, but many would not taste good cold (example: canned soup). Still, in a pinch (like a situation without electricity), you would survive eating them.

What cookbooks that aren't newly published do you like the most?

Mastering the Art of French Cooking is one of my all-time faves. I would never have gotten into cooking (aside from microwaving things to warm them up) without Julia Child. Also love Joy of Cooking -- have both the classic and the 75th Anniversary editions. Old church cookbooks are also...
