I think I've messed up here...

I was thinking of some sort of starch - cornstarch, most common, but many others out there.

    What's for dinner Thursday, April 18, 2024?

I made an Italian type dish tonight, because I trimmed a bunch more basil from those plants in the hydroponics, to trigger some new growth, to take cuttings from those. I first took some dried eggplant and dried green beans, equivalent to 1 and ½ lb of each, and set it to soak in hot water...

    Garden 2024

That's exactly what happened with me, maybe the 3rd year I was growing garlic, and was afraid that the garlic that had appeared would get killed by the extreme cold of the winter ahead! Others that had been growing it for much longer, told me not to worry, as it would always come back.

How cheap can you feed someone?

That's smart cooking! Some things aren't as good frozen, but most freeze very well, and why make something 3 or 4 times, when it thaws well, and saves you a lot of time? And I'm not one of those that can't eat the same thing several times in a row - some things I like so much that I'll eat it...

Those Swiss chard are still getting large - surprisingly not a hint of bolting yet, but as soon as they show that, I'll harvest all of them, as those spots get other plants in them soon. Here are those Swiss chard plants, out front, that I planted sometime last fall, harvested a bunch then...

That doesn't sound right for an azalea, unless they have dwarfs, or some other miniatures! But then, I've never grown them, just seen them elsewhere. All of my tomatoes are started; those two that were the latest - Big Cheef and Daniel Burson - have only one seedling in the two pots, and the...

How cheap can you feed someone?

Definitely, CD - the Foodsaver will help save you a lot! Not just for freezing food, but many other things, like spices, and dried fruits and grains, and many other things that go bad, eventually, even when it seems they are packed well - they just loose their flavor or quality. I have I...

    Petty Vents II

That was a 12 cu ft, upright freezer, I got at a yardsale, in '75, and was probably the only student that I knew that had a freezer. And this was before the days when everyone had microwave ovens, to thaw and re-heat all those frozen leftovers! Had to plan in advance a little more back then...

Tax day (US) dinner, April 15, 2024

I was going to make something in the Instant Pot today, but instead, I made a batch of yogurt in it (finishes in about an hour), and took a loaf of bread out of the freezer, to have some sandwiches with, which was good, since it was hot out today! That other thing I'll make when it gets cooler...

    Petty Vents II

You're right, @medtran49! That was something else I learned early on, and, though I was never much on drinking beer, they had frequently keg parties on campus, and I would drain the foam out of the empty kegs, and let it settle, and take it back to the apartment, and freeze it (I got a freezer...

    Petty Vents II

Actually, you can make it in an hour, but I know from the one time I tried it, not much flavor developed in it. That was something that I tried in my early days, when making bread, from a recipe in a book I got back then, in the 70s. There was a term they had for it - Instablend, if I remember...

How cheap can you feed someone?

I definitely don't spend $50 a week to feed myself, though I couldn't give you even a general number of what I spend. There are many weeks I go w/o going to any stores, when there are no great deals, then there are some weeks when there are things I stock up on (this week SR has something I...

The lights used most these days - the LEDs - use much less electricity and put out much less heat, for the light output, compared to those metal halide, or HPS lights.

    Garden 2024

Something related to this, before I ever grew the hydroponics, but had a very bright Metal Halide light, for the seedlings, upstairs, in my laundry room. I was out in front of my house, doing some things on my car, with the hood up, and a cop car drove by, and about 2 minutes later he drove...

It looks nice out today, but was much cooler, and incredibly windy, so I only went out briefly for a couple things, so I went down to do some things in the hydroponics (which I've been ignoring lately, with all the other things). The Russian red kale I had to pull out, as it was growing into...

Conflicting info for mortar and pestle care?

I'm the opposite - as I got older, I kept seeing more things in the garden, though eventually, it couldn't get larger. Unfortunately, these areas don't allow front yards dug up, for growing food. So I just leave the weeds, though I have thought of planting some creeping thyme as a lawn...

Conflicting info for mortar and pestle care?

That molcajete isn't really hard to clean, but then, as I noted, mine is sealed, and the pestle I often put in my DW - the mortar could be, but I always do that by hand. With that seal, the strong aromas - like garlic - wash out better than if not sealed!

Conflicting info for mortar and pestle care?

I have several mortar and pestle sets, and have done a couple of unusual things with them that has helped out with them. The two I use the most are the Thai granite one, and the other, which I use the most, and grinds things up the fastest, is the Mexican Molcajete, which is made of a coarse...

    How to make Lemongrass stronger?

If you have the smaller diameter lemongrass, it is milder - it's a different species, that is what you'll find seeds for. The larger diameter type that you usually find in groceries, is one that is much stronger, and that one you have to propagate by rooting the stems, as they won't flower...

    Garden 2024

The main thing I did in the garden today was setting up the drip irrigation lines in my garlic bed, and the mint bed. I tested them, to make sure there were no unwanted leaks, then shut them off, as I definitely won't be needing them soon! I set my leaf cutter bees house up again - too early to...

    Today's harvest

Yesterday, I harvested some of my spearmint, to make my first mint tea of the season. Just a bunch of 3-4" stalks - not a lot of flavor, at first, but I always look forward to starting to get that mint! And soon, I'll have enough of the peppermint, to start using in Indian dishes. First...

Overnight, I had 8 more tomato varieties sprout, plus some of the previous varieties had more. Green Brandy, Negro Azteka, Ron's Carbon Copy, Rosella, Early Blue Ribbon F1, Mountain Rouge F1, Primary Colors Angora, and Pruden's Purple Pink are the 8 new ones to sprout, and some of the earlier...

When I was done outside today, I went upstairs to clean up, and of course, I had to look to see if any more seeds had sprouted. lol At 6:30 pm, there were 4 of the tomatoes sprouted - Napa Rose, Sunsugar (always one of the first), Genuwine F1, and Superfantastic. I also noticed that all 3 of...

What's your weather right now? 2024 Edition

It got to 79° here today, warmest day since sometime last October. Rain starting in the morning, but the worst is coming Thursday, into Friday, and we might get an inch or so over the next 3 days. Staying around 70°, and higher than average lows, as well.
