    Tonight's main meal? Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013.

I bought a 2-pound slab of sirloin steak from a butcher shop;was going to make a Moroccan beef stew with it, but there's no fat on it, hardly any. So it would be tough stew, right? maybe Swiss steak in the oven? still too tough? or, maybe I'll simply sliver it and make a stir fry in wok, with...

    ?? about spaghetti meat sauce....

I have noticed that when I have this in restaurants, the meat part is very soft. Perhaps they boiled the ground meat in the tomatoes? I usually fry the meat first. Does anyone here NOT fry their meat before adding tomatoes and such? Do you like the texture?

    Making a yogi's bread

I think this is also called "Yogi or Yogin bread" on the internet. The instructions read like a story, but also a lovely "mindfulness" technique on baking. I suspect it would take a full day's work on my part to do this, but I'm planning to, as soon as I locate all the ingredients. Recipe...

6 weeks after my triple bypass

I can't remember if I told you guys that I had heart scare, then surgery on Jan. 3rd. It's all been like a bad dream since then. Coming home just 5 days after, in lots of pain the first two weeks especially, resting much, friends dropping in almost daily.....exhausted. So now it's moving into...

    Too early for Christmas baking?

We Canadians are finished with thanksgiving for this year, and I'm now ready to focus on Christmas baking. My hubby loves fruitcake,(I prefer yeast fruit bread), but we both detest the commercial dried fruit mixtures one can buy for homemade baking. So this year, I'm mixing up my own, using...

I bought these months ago, dry, and now have some filling for them.... Here's some chicken filling (with chinese cabbage, carrots, onions, mushrooms, fennel bulb and spices....all shredded): The wrapper tells me how to roll them, but not ow to cook these ....maybe they are eaten raw? Can I...

    Harry, how did surgery go?

Was thinking of you as I plan to make the smoked herring scalloped potatoes today. Hope your shoulder surgery went well. I imagine there is going to be some residual post-op pain. (I've had 4 misc. major surgeries). Wishing you well!

    Chocolate Marshmallow Cookies

My cousin in CA just emailed me this recipe she makes often, it requires a bag of tiny marshmallows, which she claims is what makes the cookies chewy. Problem is: my hubby hates marshmallows....and can't believe I would want to make these. So I'm wondering if I can melt the marshmallows, add the...

What do you do when out of bread?

Hi. Been away cooking at a monastery for a week, feel out of touch. Exhausted too, didn't sleep much in the spongey, rolly single bed they provided. But it was a good week, nevertheless. Challenging. People often show up unanounced with cooked food and want me to add it to the menu at last...

When you make stew: stove top or oven?

I prefer my meat roasted, esp after browning it on top of stove in cast-iron fp. But my hubby insists that it would be just as tender if I simmer it on top of the stove. This topic today because it's pretty hot in the house right now, and I'm planning to do up a Moroccan lamb stew for a potluck...

Just Made a Gluten Free Cake.

from a mix, this gluten-free cake looks like a giant baking powder biscuit. I want to bring it to a potluck today, and it needs to look better than bald on a plate. So I'm thinking: a lemon sauce, and some sliced strawberries....but how to present? Strawb sliced atop cake and sauce in bowl...

    Playing with flours

Just found a bag of Canadian Red Fife organic wheat flour, had to buy it....to try the flour of course, but also cuz I like the soft, cotton bag! (will find another use for it, I'm sure). Never tried this flour before, so may begin with baking powder biscuits - quick and easy way to test a...

How to save my strawb cake?

Oh no!....I made up a batch of this fav old recipe for 'strawberry loaf cake' and put it into the oven over 30 mins ago.....but just noticed, in the small print at top of my hand-written recipe: "makes 2". How did I miss this??? It now sits in the oven, bulging but not yet overflowing its one...

    smoked fishcakes anyone?

I bought two frozen smoked mackerels. They've been thawing for 2 days in fridge and need to be eaten tonight. I don't know how to serve these, except on crackers...so I googled, and a British food site suggested making fish cakes, or cutlets, adding in some horseradish and parsley. I love fish...

DH only likes one kind of cookie

I get so bored of making this oatmeal cookie. The recipe is on the Robin Hood Old Mill Oats bag which we can buy in any grocery store. But my husband just LOVES it and always asks for it. I try to vary the recipe by adding different grains, like coconut along with the oatmeal, or sesame seeds...

    What's your desktop picture?

I just changed mine to this, my hubby, taken in Tulum Mexico, January 17th...early morning. I love staring into it and remembering this walk along a deserted beach, 8AM. ....in JANUARY! Some of those footprints around the base of the tree are mine.

I had some leftover mashed potatoes..

and today am making biscuits with them... and added some leftover cottage cheese, then flour, bp, salt....no liquids cuz the cottage cheese is pretty wet. Then I had an inkling to add some crushed potato chips....so rolled only 4 of the biscuits (I may regret doing only 4) in some crushed chips...

    This chocolate tastes disgusting!

I bought two bars of this Mayan chocolate at the airport in Cancun, Mexico. It wasn't cheap! ($11. U.S. for one bar). I unsuspectingly bought two bars, one to try, one to gift to a friend. It tastes like soap. Both bars are going into the garbage - or perhaps the soap pot. Dang!

    Pork Spaghetti Sauce

or maybe I should just call it 'Spaghetti Sauce with pork added'. I am making this now. I really feel like roasting the meat and all the veggies together, then puree the entire thing in my food processor. On bottom, I put a can of diced tomatoes, then lay sliced red onions, sliced green...

what I made for the potluck

Except for the dal dish (lower left and still needs to be warmed up), the gluten-free sesame biscuits (far right), and the brownies (center), I cooked all the rest early this morning, to take for a lunch today. The dal I made yesterday, the biscuits last night, the brownies days ago and stored...

    Making Stollen Today

My aunt's recipe says to let it rise for 1 hour, then punch down and add the fruit. It's ready to punch now, so I'm about to do it....but I forgot to add cardamom, which I love, so am sprinkling it all over the fruit and mixing it in that way. I do't usually add dried fruit AFTER the first...

    My grandfather's recipe

This we also called "Capushniuk"(not sure of the spelling, could be 'kapusnik' or some variation of such....My Mom called it simply: "Cabbage-Peas". The cabbage was really sauerkraut and the peas were dried, split yellow peas cooked but not to a mush as in soup. This was served at every special...
