    Anyone drink broth for health?

I freeze bones from chicken I’ve roasted and when I have enough, I make broth. Like Kathleen, I use the broth for soup. I also enjoy sipping a mug of plain hot broth on cold winter evenings, especially when I feel chilly or feel like I’m coming down with a cold. Hot broth always makes me feel...

    Apple Squares

Andy ~ I just made your Apple Squares and they are delicious! I didn’t change a thing and they’re perfect — so good with a little dusting of powdered sugar. Thank you for sharing this recipe. I’ll be making these squares often. FYI: My neighbor tasted these and insisted on having the...

The best step to peel hard boiled eggs is not using very fresh eggs?

I steam my eggs. I read online that steamed eggs are easiest to peel. So, I used my veggie steamer and steamed a dozen eggs and believe it or not, every one was easy to peel. I steamed the eggs for 12 minutes over boiling water (cover on) and then put them in ice water. When they were cool...

    Watery Broth

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions! I helped my friend this morning — we brought the broth to a boil and then simmered it for several hours. We added salt, cider vinegar, and more roasted chicken bones. The broth turned out soooo much better. My friend is very happy and thanks all of...

    Watery Broth

I need some advice for a friend. I often make my own broths and they are always good. My friend made chicken broth today with bones from roasted chicken. She asked me to taste it. It had very little flavor (watery) even though she added onion, garlic, celery, carrots, and spices. I think...

    Christmas Day Christmas Eve dinner?

Wow! Rick, your desserts sound fantastic!! Don’t tell me you make all of them!!! We do heavy appetizers on the Eve or if we have a full meal, it includes fish, usually salmon. As others mentioned, we , too, have prime rib roast on Christmas Day. It is the only time of year that we cook a...

    Cake idea needed

I think medtran’s idea is great! Cupcakes in three flavors to fit each taste. You could even get three small cupcake trees so each person has his/her own personal cupcakes! Good Luck! Let us know what you decide to do.

What books were your favourites when you were a child?

I read Black Beauty, Lassie, and Nancy Drew. I also remember reading The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew, Pippi Longstocking, and The Moffets. When I was a young teen, I loved mysteries and still do. I spent many summer days reading while perched high in a tree!

Totally agree with you, John! Boiling hot water in the pan and a little gentle scrubbing does the trick every time!

    Help With Cast Iron Pan!

The boiling water worked perfectly. I used a spatula to scrape the hard bits a little, but most of the sticky sugar came off with the boiling water. I did season the pan again and it is good to go again! Thanks everyone for all your help!!!

    Freezing Cherry Crisp?

Thank you, Cheryl and Ross. I will definitely be freezing some of the cherries for future use. Right now I have two baked crisps. I'm going to freeze the smaller one and see what happens when I defrost it and reheat it. I appreciate your suggestions. Thanks, again!

    Freezing Cherry Crisp?

Hi All ~ I have been given 50 pounds of sweet Bing cherries! I offered some to friends and neighbors, but they only took enough to eat fresh. No one wants to cook! So, I made a delicious cherry cobbler and am in the process of making another. I want to make this one in smaller portions and...

    Help With Cast Iron Pan!

Thanks, again, everyone. I'm trying the hot water method and, hopefully, it will help loosen the burnt on sugar. I'll let you know. Stock Pot ~ Please let us know about the scrub pad you just purchased. I hope it works!!

    Forgot the lemon juice!!

I assume you made tomato salsa versus green chili salsa, etc. The tomatoes are acidic enough to preserve the salsa. I don't think the lemon juice would have made any difference. I have a friend who makes 50-60 quarts of tomato (pasta) sauce every year and uses a pressure cooker. He never...

    Help With Cast Iron Pan!

I marinated a flatiron steak in Korean Beef Marinade that I made. The marinade called for brown sugar, soysauce, etc. I cooked the beef in my cast iron frying pan. The steak turned out great -- tender and delicious! BUT ... my poor pan suffered. I think the brown sugar in the marinade...

    New to an electric range

I use both electric and gas ranges. The most important thing to remember is that it takes a few minutes for an electric unit to heat up and when you turn it off, it takes a while to cool down. So, I often turn off the electric unit a bit early knowing that the food will continue to cook for a...

    ISO Cabbage soup ideas/recipes

Here is a recipe I use when I have extra cabbage --- I combined several recipes. You may use ground beef instead of turkey. Also, to make the soup in shorter time, you could add precooked rice, pasta, or potatoes, etc. I make lots of this soup and freeze portions for quick lunches or light...

Possibly a dumb question about Condensed soup in a recipe.

Larry ~ I do understand why you asked the question about the soup. I would have had the same question. I rarely use canned soups -- only when I'm very desperate! Ha! Ha! Yep, gardening time is fast approaching here in Northern California. I do have cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, and...

Possibly a dumb question about Condensed soup in a recipe.

Hi Larry ~ How lucky to have your own potatoes! I grew some several years ago and now, thanks to you, I'm thinking of trying some this year! BUT ..... I don't think I would use the recipe you posted. Why smother delicious home grown potatoes in cream soup, sour cream, and ranch dressing...

    Persimmons?

The persimmons shown in the pictures on this thread are Fuyu persimmons. They can be eaten when they are still hard and deep orange in color -- like an apple (skin included). They are delicious cut up in a salad or you can wait until they are soft and eat them like jam -- warm toast, peanut...
