I have to feed a family of 3 for 10 days on $65- what would you buy?

There really is some wonderful advice on this thread! I've been in your position before and I approched it as a challenge that I was determined to conquer; and I did! I honed a recipe for Southwestern Bean Soup during that time that you might like to try: 1 small onion, minced 2 cloves...

    Turkey Safety

If it's any consolation, I'm in the same boat as you. I have to toss the turkey carcass as well. I had good intentions but time got away from me I guess. I will glumly shuffle my way to the fridge, pull it out and deposit it in the trash with my head hung low. Is there any reason to...

What a lovely fruit combination for a pie! Thanks for the links LPB, this pie is going on my Christmas list LOL, and by that I mean my list of foods to make for Christmas :)

    Shopping the sales

I LOVE when the big pork loins are on sale! I always have the meat counter cut it up for me so it's easier to handle. I usually have half of it cut into chops and the other half I make pulled pork with. The new flyer came out today for my grocery store... I should take a look! $1.49/lb. is a...

What a wonderful post! Thanks for the reminder to take a step back and take it all in.

What's the weirdest or most remarkable thing you've eaten for Thanksgiving?

Nothing too crazy here but one year my brother brought chili chocolate cupcakes with cream cheese frosting to Thanksgiving. They were made with dark chocolate, ground ancho chile pepper and cayenne. They were an unexpected twist and very yummy. I had forgotten about them until now. I'm going...

    What's Cooking Wednesday, November 23?

Mashed potatoes, corn casserole, pies, a cheese ball, cupcakes... all for tomorrow. No dinner plans tonight! We might just order pizza since the kitchen will be busy with all that other stuff.

Stuffing - What's up with eggs?

Then again it could totally backfire if they decide to stick around!!

Stuffing - What's up with eggs?

Some stuffings can be sweet AND savory. Some have apples, cranberries and/or raisins in it. I think stuffings leave a lot of room for creativity. I've eaten so many different kinds but oddly enough have never made any myself.

Stuffing - What's up with eggs?

My grocer's bakery sells "stuffing bread" that looks like it would be awesome for making stuffing. It's not the tiny croutons like Stove Top or Pepperidge Farm uses. These "croutons" are about 3 or 4 times the size. So anyway, you might check your grocer's bakery dept to see what they have...

Anyone use Alton Brown's Turkey Recipe?

I'm using Alton's brining/cooking method for the first time this year too. I'm using a 13 lb. thawed organic turkey. I'm very excited! I bought the digital probe thermometer a couple days ago and just procured a food-safe bucket from the bakery dept at my grocer about an hour ago. It's all...

How to best employ the electric roaster??

Thank you all for the input. Part of my problem is that I'm unfamiliar with roasters so I'm a bit skittish! That and this is the first time I've been responsible for the meat at Thanksgiving (yikes!). I plan to follow Alton Brown's instructions to a T so I think I'll keep the whole bird in...

What have you had for breakfast lately?

Get out! You can cook oatmeal in a rice cooker?! Can I get some details on that? Sounds genius.

    Starch for a fish dish?

My go-to starch for fish is rice. Long grain wild rice presents very nicely. White or brown steamed rice would look pretty boring though. You could also opt for roasted mixed veggies on the side instead. Some veggie mixes include small roasted potatoes which also present nicely when the...

    Turkey questions

I had to laugh at this because when I told my mother in law I bought an organic turkey I could see her look of disapproval even over the phone LOL She thinks Butterballs are the end-all-be-all of turkeys. Now hopefully I can prove her wrong

I'm with Steve and Andy here. Grilled onions (maybe even carmelized!) make a great addition too.
