    Who Likes Beer?

Beer can be fantastic, it can also be utter rubbish (case in point; american beers (sorry but it's beer-flavoured water), and a few of the mass produced beers here in Australia). If you can, try to get your hands on a Belgium beer called Duvel Puurs. Quite different, but very good. I'm...

    Sweet potato idea?

Sweet Potato and Avocado Quesadilla I made this up yesterday for lunch to use up some leftovers: 2 flour tortillas 1 small sweet potato, cut into thin slices, steamed (or boiled) half an avocado ground cumin 1 small garlic clove, minced cheese, if you want it Mash the avocado with the cumin...

    Green Bananas Won't Ripen

Try placing them in a brown paper bag together with a ripe apple or tomato. This can help speed up the ripening process.

    Calories - What is Right?

They are not actually uncooked. They have been deep-fried prior to being packaged. The boiling water you add is simply to reconstitute them. See above.

What to do with soy milk?

I consume a fair bit of soy milk, not as a milk substitute (which it can never be) but as an occasional flavour change from regular milk. I also find that it's slightly nutty flavour goes better with some foods than milk does (such as the cereal Weet-Bix). I would not be too quick to write off...

    White eggs or brown eggs

There is absolutely no difference between white and brown eggs apart from their colour. White eggs are laid by one breed of hen, brown eggs are laid by a different breed.

Knowing big chain-restaurants it probably is rubber.

Soups - Good place to start?

Stock based soups are also quite difficult to make right. This is simply due to the fact that the stock must be of high quality if it is to taste its best (and the best stock is homemade stock). Vegetarian soups do not have to taste average. Perhaps the best way to start would be to post the...

    Wendy's says bye to Biggie

A show on Australian TV did the same sort of thing. They bought a cheeseburger 3 years ago and stored it. After 3 years had passed they went out and bought a fresh one, it looked exactly the same. Can't remember the last time I ate anything from a commercial fast food place, and I turn it down...

    FIFA WorldCup 2006

Heh, the Socceroos have had complaints that their too 'physical'. We just play soccer like we play all our national games, rough. No biffo yet, but it was only their first game :).

    FIFA WorldCup 2006

Eat it Japan, eat it all up. Should have been 3-0, but it's all the same to us now.

    Quick salami pasta dish

Was looking for something quick and tasty to make for my dinner tonight, looked in the fridge, pretty sparse, apart from a spicy salami with plenty of black pepper. From this starting point came a very simple, but delicious meal. I'm not even going to bother with quantities, I have no idea how...

    Alternative to Peanut oil?

Can also be sold in vacuum-packed (or regular) plastic bags. Make sure you rinse them first before using.

    Any dairy free appatizers?

Real mayonnaise does not have any dairy in it. Eggs, oil, vinegar and sometimes mustard.

    Alternative to Peanut oil?

I do not know about elsewhere, but here in Australia it is generally cheaper to buy peanut oil (or other Asian groceries, of course) from Asian supermarkets and stores rather than the big chain supermarkets. Might help.

    Chilled cherry soup

As a variation to Ishbel's recipe, I thought I might post a recipe for cherry soup that I have. I found that you could serve this both as an entree or a dessert depending on how much sugar you use and by using different types of wine. You could use perhaps a rose when serving it as a dessert...

    Chilled cherry soup

I would say frozen cherries would work quite well simply because you are pureeing the soup so the softer texture of frozen cherries would not matter. Depends what you mean by regular sugar. Does regular mean regular white sugar? Or does it mean raw sugar? But then again sugar, for all intents...

    Is vodka fattening?

Nothing like a beer breakfast after a hard night's drinking. Ahh the days of college.

    Is vodka fattening?

Otherwise known as liquid bread. Grains, sugar, water and yeast.

    Is vodka fattening?

Dehydration is the key reason since while you are drinking alcohol, you're probably not drinking water and the fact that alcohol is a diuretic. Slam down at least a litre of water before climbing into bed, and keep a large bottle handy for in the morning and I guarantee you will feel infinitely...

    Alternative to Peanut oil?

If you have a bottle of sunflower, canola or other neutrally flavoured cooking oil then you can use that instead of the peanut oil. It will be lacking the subtle flavour that peanut oil adds, but the dish will still turn out fine. Make more Asian stir-fries, simple as that. You can also use...

    Locking up the good stuff

Certain things don't get cleaned by other members of my household. These include; my wok, stainless steel pan, cast iron grill pan and chef's knife. I very rarely do any of the dishwashing at home (I cook, I don't clean), but those things I take care of as I don't want anyone taking accidently...

TNT - Broccoli and Anchovy Pasta

Whipped this up for dinner tonight. It's a fantastic, quick meal that requires only one fresh ingredient (or not even that if you have frozen broccoli) so it's a great pantry staple meal. Broccoli and Anchovy Pasta 2 large heads of broccoli 2 large garlic cloves, crushed 8 anchovy fillets in...
