    Worse Than A Puppy

I've never had a cat who was a licker. Once in a blue moon, all of my cats have given me a lick or two, but not regularly. Even my dog, when you ask him for a kiss, he will come up and turn his cheek toward you so you can kiss HIM. He learned that all by himself and I'm just as happy as can...

    Peanut Brittle

I just found a recipe from the very best peanut brittle I've ever had. It's very similar to all of these (I don't suppose that there are too many ways to make it), but it's a grandma's recipe, so it says things like boil until it spins a thread. What is the temp I would expect if I were...

Chicago Style Italian Beef Sandwich recipe please

I don't use the Italian seasoning packets. I use my own combinations of oregano, basil, chopped onions, garlic, a bit of crushed red pepper, etc. Along with that, I use beef broth rather than beer, and throw in a few hot peppers to the broth. They're just delicious. BC

Do you cook with an apron?

My mom still has a few of the ladies tie-around-the-waist aprons and I remember she used to on occasion tie them up around the bosom area, just under her arms, instead of around her waist when she was cooking particularly messy stuff. She's really tiny, so that lap apron was plenty long enough...

Did Anyone Watch House this Week?

I just got done watching it. That cop has to go, or I won't be able to continue watching it. There's no way in the world that he would really get by with intimidating these people like he does and having free reign in that hospital. They claimed that Wilson't lawyer told him that he didn't...

What does your family like to have for Christmas dinner?

How about a crown roast of pork, MM? That makes a lovely Christmas dinner, and you can be as experimental as you want to be with the stuffing. I've done that several times for Christmas dinner and it's a huge hit. This year, however, we will probably go with the traditional ham and stuffed...

    Black Friday Ads On-Line Already!

Mudbug is correct. It's called Black Friday because it refers to the day when a retailer turns from being unprofitable ("in the red") to being profitable ("in the black") for the year. BC

    Amazing Facts about Cats! pt.1

The more cats are spoken to, the more they will speak to you. That's interesting. I'm always talking to them, and they are always talking to me. My senior cat will even join in a conversation I might have with the other human in the house. I'm sure he sees himself as one of us. As for the...

This is not James Bond anymore...

You know, neither do I truly, Mudbug. I love to listen to Sinatra, despicable a man as he was. And the interviews where Connery showed his backside didn't really make or break my opinion of him as an actor - but they didn't endear him any, that's for sure. And as I said, I liked him early on...

This is not James Bond anymore...

I know what kind of response this comment always gets, but I don't understand the fascination with Sean Connery. He was good as Bond, I'll give you that. He's turned into such a charicature that I can hardly stand to hear that lisp for a minute now! It didn't help that he turned me off so much...

What is a well-known dish in your area?

Absolutely, Chicago's deep dish pizza is a very famous dish. It's something they're very proud of doing so well. It is not so much a regional dish though - just something they are very good at. And Portillo's is great for Italian beef sandwiches. I have a Portillo's restaurant within a mile...

    I Like The Holiday Scene

I saw the holiday scene earlier today from work, but now I don't see it. Either Firefox is goofy, or maybe switching to the new server did something to make it disappear. Editing to say that it must have been Firefox. I'm in IE now and it's there. BC

What is a well-known dish in your area?

Italian beef sandwiches seem to be a popular regional food here in the Chicago area. They're delicious. It's slow cooked beef in a broth with Italian spices, served with hot or mild peppers on a crusty French type of bread, sliced lengthwise. I like mine with sweet onion and hot peppers. BC

    Weed free rose garden

Round up is a complete vegetation killer, and will travel down into the soil and kill your roses. Do not use it anywhere near your rose bushes! I've grown roses for 15 years. I've even dug up a particularly weedy rose bed, removed the roses to pots, Round Up'd, waited until it had dissipated...

Some good snacks for a recent ex smoker

I also ate Altoids like mad, but for me it was because I didn't like the taste of mint in my mouth when I smoked, and thus wouldn't want to smoke if I had eaten a mint or after brushing my teeth or using mouthwash. I did a lot of toothbrushing, needless to say. The Altoids were mostly consumed...

Yep. I had the same trouble with the link I had in my favorites. I got here in a side door, because I had saved one topic I had searched for in my favorites, or I'd never have gotten here at all.
