"The fear of missing out".. how bad it is to our world?

My grandparents had mobility issues, etc., when they were older, and had great lives, and there was no social media back then. When I'm in the situation they were in, it will still be personal preference as to how much I use social media. I suspect I'll continue to write letters and talk on...

"The fear of missing out".. how bad it is to our world?

The amount of social media you do, vs things like gardening, is all personal preference. I began trading social media time for other things many years ago, and now I have it under control (I think). I read more good books, cook more, garden more, hike more, walk more, etc. I did not know how...

Non-Stick vs Stainless Steel vs Cast Iron Pans?

When our favorite Teflon skillet wore out I decided to abandon teflon; however, I wasn't sure which direction to go, so I bought a cheap teflon skillet at Safeway, planning to only use it for a few months. So I see nothing wrong with doing that, as long as you use those 'few months' to come up...

"The fear of missing out".. how bad it is to our world?

I thought FOMO was buying too much of something because you were afraid it might not be there later - either the brand or style would go away, or the item might sell out in your area, or be banned (tobacco, ammunition). In severe cases, you would buy enough to last until years after you will...

How Many Cookbooks Do You Have?

I'll calmly walk away while you continue discussing this with your straw man.

How Many Cookbooks Do You Have?

The topic was a positive one about cookbooks. You turned it into not liking books in general - what did you expect?

Why stainless steel cookware isn't as popular as the others?

I finally did the 'fried egg test' in one of my Carbon steel pans today - cooked pork chops, then three pieces of bacon. After, basted four eggs perfectly. The eggs didn't slide around like they would in non-stick, but that's kind of good when you're trying to baste. Clean-up was simple...

How Many Cookbooks Do You Have?

I must have been anticipating your post - I ordered Root's 'Best of Italian Cooking' yesterday after posting. Thanks for the suggestions.

Why stainless steel cookware isn't as popular as the others?

Okay, Amazon said Black Cube is made in China. I just called Frieling and she initially said 'Germany', but when I told her that Amazon said 'China', she got out the specs and found that they are made in Viet Nam.

Why stainless steel cookware isn't as popular as the others?

Thanks - I just checked, and it's also made in China.

Why stainless steel cookware isn't as popular as the others?

Sounds like it's more similar to the U.S. situation than we thought. Almost everyone I know cooks with non-stick, except me. Even my girlfriend, and she lives with me. We both use SS sauce pans, but that's our only SS. I was curious about Hexclad (made in China), and considered buying a set...

How Many Cookbooks Do You Have?

That is great information. I sold most of my books when I made a cross-country move back in 2006 - would have been financially better to donate them if I had known about that option. I have about twenty cookbooks. My favorite is Root's 'The Food of France'. A close second is 'Creole Gumbo...

Non-Stick vs Stainless Steel vs Cast Iron Pans?

Just noticed you are from Canada - 'Cook Culture' is in Canada, so you can order a tin of his beeswax seasoning or watch his video on how to make your own - I have four pipe tobacco tins full of my own stuff.

Non-Stick vs Stainless Steel vs Cast Iron Pans?

You can dive in with a Matfer 12" for around $60. I watched several 'Cook Culture' videos on seasoning and did exactly what they (Jed) said to do. But the fun part was getting excited, messing up, re-doing, until I was finally cooking food correctly in it. Also picked up a 10" crepe pan...
