    Boxing Day menus

Just wanted to say "thanks" for all the replies. I had all the ingredients to make CrystalWriter's ham and turkey pie and then ended up in bed all day with a nasty stomach virus, so Boxing Day never happened for us! I think I'll probably do the recipe on Saturday if I feel a whole lot better...

    Boxing Day menus

Hi everyone, My husband is British so Boxing Day has always been a big part of his holiday celebration. When I ask him about his mum's Boxing Day menu, though, he just shrugs and says "leftovers." Well, I like to plan a little more elaborately than that so I was wondering if anyone out there...

    Bow Tie Pasta

Thanks everyone for the ideas. I went with Kayelle's suggestion for the Italian Flag Casserole because I actually had quite a few of the ingredients in my overstock cupboard and my goal for this meal was to use up some overstock. I had to use fresh spinach and I subbed asparagus for the...

    Bow Tie Pasta

After cleaning out my pantry yesterday I discovered quite an appalling quantity of bow-tie pasta and was hoping someone might have some ideas for how to use it. I also have some asparagus that needs to be used up and plenty of frozen chicken breasts. I own pretty much every spice and condiment...

    Who hoards food?

"Hoard" food, I've never heard it put that way! :) I "stock up" but I don't do extreme couponing or anything, in fact I rarely use coupons unless they can be put on my club card. But whenever something goes on sale that my family eats regularly, I do one of two things: 1) If it's non...

    Storing vanilla beans

That is a great tip! I paid five bucks for just two of them on iGourmet.com. Clearly it pays to shop around!

    Ricing potatoes

Someone else might have already said this, but I've heard that you can use a ricer for squeezing the liquid out of grated raw potatoes, which makes for a better fried hash brown. I haven't actually tried it yet, although it's the main reason I recently bought my ricer because my hash browns...

What foods you don't ever want to see on your plate?

Haha! I would totally eat rattlesnake. I'm game for trying almost anything (I ate kangaroo just last week!) as long as it isn't entrails or bugs. I don't have to like it, though, or eat it twice!

What foods you don't ever want to see on your plate?

Blech!! She also used to make this thing called "salmon loaf," which didn't have any actual salmon in it. I think it was made with canned mackerel. All I remember is there were crunchy little bits of bone in it and little squishy bits of fish gut. Yuck!! Oh and the casseroles, always with the...

How about this plating :) Please advise

Someone else may have already said this, but I would chop up the basil and sprinkle it on top, or maybe cut it into slivers. Basil goes great with pasta and red sauce so I think it should really be incorporated better. Otherwise the photo looks great!

What foods you don't ever want to see on your plate?

My mom used to make this recipe called "cream tuna peas on toast." It looked like someone threw up on a slice of bread. Come to think of it, I wouldn't want to see any version of peas on my plate. I still don't like them, all these years later.

Kid-friendly meals in 15 minutes or less?

LOL! Thanks for all the ideas. Don't know why I never thought of quesadillas or stir fry! Think I've got next week's menu planned already!

Kid-friendly meals in 15 minutes or less?

Moms and dads: What's your go-to fast weeknight dinner recipe? My busy night of the week is Wednesday, and I usually just put on a crockpot meal so dinner will be ready when I get home. I would love to have some other alternatives, though. Anyone have a great and fast kid-friendly recipe you...

What are you cooking this weekend?

    Sourdough starters

I've had the worst time trying to make starter. I've followed the directions given in several recipes and just get ... nothing. No life. Someone told me it was because of our altitude ... but we're only at 1,200 feet so that doesn't seem right. I've been thinking of just buying some ... saw some...
