Here's my question.

I need a flat - very flat - bed pillow for DH.

We are talking maybe 1" is all.

He has a bad back and neck from a long ago vehicle accident so anything more than that gives him horrific neck pain and headaches.

I used to be able to get inch and a half thick pillows when we lived on the west coast. He has used the last one until it needs to be replaced.

I simply can not find one out here.

Do any of you have any ideas for me as to where I can get something that flat?

I got a regular one and opened it up, pulled most of the stuff out of it but it separated too much.

We've tried using towels but they are too hard.

He can't used memory foam because they are too high also.

Any and all ideas are welcome !

A hunk of "egg crate", maybe doubled, might work. You can find big sheets of it at Walmart or like places, just cut to size.

The thinnest I could find was 2.25" thick.

Your best bet may be to find a foam rubber dealer and special order a pillow to your specs.

I just bought a large sheet of foam 2" at a fabric store for a project.

They had several types 1/2" 1" up to 4" in stock. Very inexpensive.
They can cut it in half for you. All you'll have to do is make a slip cover for it. I highly recommend buying a little bit of batting for it. It will keep the slip cover from moving around while your sewing it up. A t shirt works great as a slip cover. It's not like anyone is going to see that anyways. The foam padding you can cut yourself with a serrated knife.

I've had to make a customized pillow like that for my husband. He broke his neck in a diving accident. Every now and again his neck bothers him.

Thanks for all the great suggestions !

Cerise .. I like that one and will see about giving it a try.

If if doesn't work then I will go the foam route. Munky .. I had no idea I could get foam in so many sizes .. thanks for that info.

The best news in all of this is #1 we may solve the problem, and #2 if it doesn't work for him, I get the pillow !!

Thanks again .. you are all great help !!

Get a feather pillow. Because its essentially just a bag
of feathers, they compress nicely. And can be smushed
around to create a really flat area on the pillow.
I've been using one for years to create the same thing..
a very very thin pillow!

Oh I wish it were that easy. I understand what you are saying but the problem is that I am horrifically allergic to feathers.

It would be good for him but not for me to have feathers in the bed.

Dang, my suggestion was to go to my mom's house and take some of her pillows--they are all a hundred years old and flat as pancakes!

LOL My MIL does that .. she says you just never know when you might need another pillow !

I give our used ones to the dogs .. they love sleeping on pillows. When we get another new one so do the dogs - our old ones!

How about just several layers of quilt batting in a slip cover?

I actually thought of that but was a bit concerned about the 'stability' .. you know it holding it's shape ... but it's definitely going onto the list of things to try. Thanks !!

I would try it out to see if it makes a good pillow. Then, if it does, I would sew the edges and/or maybe tack it. By tacking (I can't remember the real term) I mean using strong thread to make a single, largish stitch (1/4" maybe) and tie the ends in a knot and leave them an inch or so long. Then repeat enough places that the batting doesn't shift. You can even use small rounds of fabric on either side of the slip covered batting to stitch through. Dang, I can't remember the name of this technique. It's an alternative to quilting stitches, especially when you want the "quilt" to be puffier.

My Google-fu doesn't seem up to snuff today.

I just remembered. It's called tufting.

Simply awesome !! Ok .. you are hired LOL

This sounds like a great way to solve a problem not only with bed pillows but with other pillows too.

Now I have to go and get crafty !

Hoping the weather will be good enough tomorrow to get out to the craft store - it's 32 miles away - and pick up stuff for all these great suggestions.

Who knows .. I may just go into the pillow business
