    Eggplant

I want to make Julia's moussaka recipe later this week when I have time. Got the stuff for it, using impossible beef instead of lamb. When the recipe says eggplant skins, how do you peel eggplant? Just use a potato peeler or...? Can't remember having peeled moussaka the last time I made it...

What have you had for lunch lately?

Leftovers today: ham, quinoa and peas. The ham I had made a Julia Child recipe with, basically was ham simmered in a wine-cream sauce. I don't usually buy it, but received free from a family member, so made the most of it. Do eat some meat, but am trying to reduce my intake of red meat due...

    Anniversary dinner ideas?

If you like seafood, almost anything with fish or shrimp is kind of fancy. Actually, shrimp scampi is something I'd consider kind of fancy, and might make for New Year's. Have with a decent white wine. Shrimp is also not that bad for cost if you buy the little ones.

What are your guilty pleasures... Fess up

Dark chocolate is a semi-guilty pleasure. Good red wine is definitely a guilty pleasure with how much it costs these days. Also, ice cream, especially chocolate ice cream.

Vinegar bad for teeth and mouth?

I thought apple cider vinegar was supposed to be good for you in general, or is that just hype? Not sure I'd be eating vinegar daily, but I do often make a basic vinaigrette to save money on salad dressings. I also use it for cleaning.

    Substitute for veal kidney

Thanks, I live in Minnesota, though I am in the Twin Cities area. I will probably go with the veal liver, Walmart has it for less than $5 a pound. There's not a huge demand here for the super gourmet foods. Yeah, you can order online at places like Wild Fork, but the shipping is expensive...

    Substitute for veal kidney

It seems that there is not much demand for kidney meats where I live. When it does come up in the grocery store search engine, it’s very expensive, over $100 for a single item, and even plain old beef or pork kidney doesn’t come up at all. If I want to make some of the Julia Child recipes with...

What's the last movie you watched?

Mine was Avatar 2 on streaming. I avoid going into theaters alone these days, for the most part. Just too risky nowadays.

Made the "Sauteed Cod With Lentils" recipe from the Gourmet Today cookbook. Did not have cod, so I substituted rainbow trout. Turned out pretty good.
